HugTek Lever Action · Side Eject

The HugTek SBSE — The Flagship Side-Eject Lever Action Rifle

The HugTek SBSE is the purest expression of HugTek’s side-eject lever action tradition — a rifle that takes the timeless lever-gun profile and refines it with modern engineering, a deep black chrome finish, and an action that runs glass-smooth straight from the box.

Where many lever actions force a compromise between classic looks and modern practicality, the SBSE refuses to. Its side-eject receiver throws spent brass clear of the sighting plane, leaving the top of the action solid and ready for a scope, red dot or thermal optic mounted low and central over the bore. Paired with an adjustable buckhorn rear sight and a hooded fibre-optic front sight, it’s a rifle you can run iron-sighted or optic-equipped with no compromise either way.

Built around a black steel receiver and a finely figured Turkish walnut stock, the SBSE delivers the heft, balance and hand-feel that lever-gun shooters chase — with the durability to back it up in the Australian bush. Gun Bar offers the SBSE in three proven calibres, so you can match the rifle to your country, your quarry and the way you like to hunt.

Whether you’re chasing pigs through scrub, walking up goats and deer, knocking over foxes on the property, or running a lever gun on the range, the HugTek SBSE is built to be the rifle you reach for first. It’s the flagship of the HugTek side-eject range — and it’s available right now, brand new, from Gun Bar.

The SBSE Difference

What Is a Side-Eject Lever Action — And Why It Matters

It’s the single feature that decides whether a lever gun is built for modern optics — or fighting them.

On a traditional top-eject lever action, the spent cartridge case is thrown straight up out of the top of the receiver. It’s the classic design and it works — but the ejection path sits exactly where you’d want to mount a scope. That’s why top-eject lever guns generally need an offset or forward “scout”-style mount to keep the optic clear of flying brass.

A side-eject lever action like the HugTek SBSE solves that problem at the source. The fired case is kicked out the side of the receiver, well clear of the line of sight, leaving the top of the action solid. That means you can mount a riflescope, red dot or low-power variable optic low and directly over the bore — exactly where it belongs for a natural cheek weld, fast target acquisition and repeatable accuracy.

For Australian hunters, that’s a genuine advantage. Red dots, compact LPVOs and thermal and digital optics have become standard kit for pigs, foxes and night work — and the SBSE is ready for all of them, while still handling beautifully on its iron sights. You get the romance, the balance and the lightning follow-up shots of a classic lever gun, with none of the optic-mounting headaches.

The Bottom Line

The HugTek SBSE gives you a solid-top receiver you can mount a modern optic on — without giving up a single thing that makes a lever gun a lever gun.

In The Field

Built For The Australian Bush

A lever gun earns its keep where rifles get used hard. Here’s where the SBSE shines.

Pigs & Scrub Country

In thick cover, a short, fast-pointing carbine beats a long-barrelled rifle every time. The .357 and .44 Magnum SBSE swing fast onto a bolting pig and cycle quick for that all-important second shot.

Deer, Goats & Walking Up Game

The 30-30 Winchester has taken Australian deer and goats for generations. With its longer 18.5″ barrel and a low-mounted optic, the SBSE turns that heritage calibre into a genuinely capable walk-and-stalk rifle.

Property & Pest Control

Foxes, feral dogs and vermin on the block call for a handy, reliable rifle that’s always ready. The threaded muzzle takes a moderator where permitted, and the side-eject receiver runs a thermal or red dot for night work.

Gun Bar Recommendation — Which SBSE Is For You?

.357Best light all-rounder for scrub, pests, plinking and lever-gun sports.
.44Best close-range knock-down for pigs and bigger bush game.
30-30Best classic hunting choice for deer, goats and general use.

Frequently Asked

HugTek SBSE — Common Questions

Quick answers to the questions we hear most. Anything not covered? Call the team on 1800 GUNBAR.

What is a side-eject lever action rifle?+
A side-eject lever action ejects the spent cartridge case out the side of the receiver rather than straight up through the top. Because the top of the receiver stays solid, you can mount a scope, red dot or thermal optic low and directly over the bore — something a traditional top-eject lever gun can’t easily do. The HugTek SBSE is a side-eject design built specifically for that modern, optics-ready advantage.
What is the difference between the HugTek SBSE and the HugTek SB?+
The core difference is the ejection system. The SBSE is side-eject — spent brass exits the side of the receiver, leaving the top solid for mounting an optic. The SB is HugTek’s top-eject model, ejecting through the top in the traditional lever-gun style. Both share the same Turkish walnut stock, black chrome finish, 5/8×24 threaded muzzle and dual safety system. If you’d prefer the classic top-eject configuration, view the HugTek SB Lever Action Rifle.
Can I fit a scope or red dot to the HugTek SBSE?+
Yes — that’s the whole point of the side-eject design. Because brass clears the side of the receiver, the top stays solid and ready for a scope, red dot, low-power variable optic or thermal mounted low and central over the bore. Talk to the Gun Bar team about the right mount and optic for your SBSE and how you intend to use it.
What firearms licence do I need for the HugTek SBSE?+
You’ll need a current firearms licence with the appropriate category for the chambering you choose, plus a genuine reason recognised in your state. Category and licensing rules for lever-action firearms vary by state and by calibre — call the Gun Bar team on 1800 GUNBAR before you order and we’ll confirm exactly what applies to you.
Which calibre should I choose — .357, .44 or 30-30?+
For a light, economical all-rounder, the .357 Magnum is hard to beat — ideal for scrub pest control, pigs and lever-gun sports. Step up to the .44 Remington Magnum for more knock-down on pigs and bigger bush game at close to moderate range. The 30-30 Winchester is the timeless choice for deer, goats and general hunting, with a longer 18.5″ barrel for added reach. Still weighing it up? We’re happy to talk it through.
What is the 5/8×24 threaded muzzle for?+
Every SBSE comes factory-threaded in 5/8×24 UNEF and capped, ready to accept a sound moderator or muzzle device. Moderator ownership is licensed separately and is only permitted in some states under specific conditions — check your state’s current rules, and we can advise on what’s available.
Is the HugTek SBSE a good hunting rifle in Australia?+
It’s an excellent fit for Australian conditions. A short, fast-handling lever carbine excels on pigs in scrub, foxes and feral pests on the property, and — in 30-30 — deer and goats on the walk. The side-eject receiver lets you add a thermal or red dot for night work, while the threaded muzzle takes a moderator where permitted. It’s a true do-it-all bush rifle.
Does the HugTek SBSE come with a warranty?+
Yes — every SBSE is brand new and comes with a 2-year warranty backed by C.R. Kennedy, the exclusive Australian distributor of HugTek firearms. C.R. Kennedy is a 92-year-old, 100% family-owned Australian company — so between Gun Bar handling your sale and C.R. Kennedy standing behind the warranty, you’ve got genuine, long-established local support. You’re not dealing with a faceless overseas reseller.
How does delivery and dealer transfer work?+
As a firearm, the SBSE ships dealer-to-dealer to your nominated licensed dealer for collection once your paperwork is in order — Gun Bar coordinates the whole process for you. Need somewhere secure to keep it? Gun Bar also offers certified short and long-term firearm storage.
